Purpose One Choice at a Time

Peter starts with the least glamorous gift of all. Use hospitality one to another. Before prophets and preachers, he mentions the person who opens the door and puts the rice on.

As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

1 Peter 4:10

And he adds two words that anyone who has hosted will recognise, without grudging. Hospitality offered with a sigh is still hospitality, but Peter wants something better for us than that.

Then he says every man hath received the gift. Every one. Nobody in the church gets to say they have nothing to give. The grace of God is manifold, a word with the sense of many coloured, so the gifts do not all look alike.

A steward does not own what he handles. He chooses, day by day, how to use what belongs to someone else. That is how purpose works here, one choice at a time. Serve, if you serve, with the ability which God giveth, not the ability you wish you had.

It might be one choice in the next hour. A neighbour knocks just as you sit down to eat. The steward's choice is small, and it is real.

The gift was never yours to keep.It is yours to hand on.

Every choice to serve is a small act of stewardship.

Give with the strength God gives today, not the strength you had last year.

Carry this today

What gift have you been treating as your own rather than as something entrusted to you?

Pray

Gracious God, thank you for the gifts you have placed in my hands, even the ones I think are small. Make me a faithful steward today. Help me open my home and my time without grudging, and serve with the strength you give, so that you are glorified and not me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read 1 Peter 4:9–11

9Use hospitality one to another without grudging. 10As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
