Purpose When You Need Clarity

The order in this chapter is easy to miss. First the coal touches Isaiah's lips and his sin is purged. Only then does he hear the voice asking Whom shall I send.

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Isaiah 6:8

God does not issue a command. He asks a question into the room, as if he is waiting to see who will answer. Isaiah, freshly forgiven, answers before he knows the assignment. Here am I; send me.

Then comes verse nine, and the assignment is hard. Go and speak to people who will hear and not understand. Isaiah's clarity was never about outcomes. It was about who had sent him.

When we ask God for clarity we usually mean a map with the ending marked in red. What Isaiah received was simpler than a map. He knew he was forgiven, and he knew who was speaking. That was enough to go.

If you are lying awake asking which way to turn, start where Isaiah started. Let yourself be forgiven first. The question of sending sounds very different to someone whose lips have just been touched.

You want to know how it ends.He tells you who is sending.

Forgiveness tends to come before assignment, not after it.

You can say Here am I without knowing every detail of where.

Carry this today

Are you asking God for clarity about the outcome, or about who is sending you?

Pray

Holy God, I keep asking for a clear map. Touch my life first with your forgiveness, and let me hear your voice more clearly than my fears. If you are asking who will go, give me the courage to answer even before I understand what it will cost. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Isaiah 6:7–9

7And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. 8Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. 9And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
