Purpose When Plans Change

Proverbs never tells you to stop planning. A man's heart deviseth his way is simply a description, and there is no rebuke in it. Planning is part of being made by a God who plans.

A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

Proverbs 16:9

But look at the two different sizes in the verse. The man devises a way. The LORD directs steps. We think in roads and destinations. God works in footfalls.

That is why plans change and purpose does not. The road you drew may bend. The job may fall through, the visa may be refused, the wedding date may move. Yet each step on the bent road is still directed.

Verse eight sits just before it like a guard at the gate. Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right. When plans collapse, the temptation is to grab the shortcut. The proverb says a smaller life lived honestly is the better one.

Maybe you are on a bus home from an interview that did not go your way, already rewriting the plan in your head. Rewrite it. Just hold the pencil loosely, and expect the next step to be given rather than forced.

You draw the road.He orders the footsteps.

A changed plan is not a lost purpose.

Choose the honest little over the dishonest much.

Carry this today

Which changed plan are you still trying to force back into its old shape?

Pray

Lord, I made plans and some of them have fallen apart. I am disappointed and I will not pretend otherwise. Direct my steps on this changed road. Keep me from shortcuts that cost my integrity, and teach me to plan with an open hand. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Proverbs 16:8–10

8Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right. 9A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. 10A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment.
