Purpose For an Ordinary Tuesday
Before the famous promise comes a quieter warning. All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes. Every plan looks good to the person who made it.
Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
That is why verse three matters. Commit thy works unto the LORD. The Hebrew word behind commit carries the picture of rolling something heavy off your own back onto someone else's. It is not a signature on a form. It is a transfer of weight.
And notice what gets steadied. Not your works first, but your thoughts. You hand him the doing and, somehow, the thinking becomes less frantic. thy thoughts shall be established.
None of this needs a special day. Tuesday is full of works. Emails, school runs, a meeting about a budget, a pot on the stove. Each one can be rolled onto him before it is begun, a short sentence breathed while the kettle boils.
And because the Lord weigheth the spirits, he is not fooled by the plan that only looks clean. That is a mercy, not a threat. He can show you what you could never see in your own reflection.
Your plans look clean to you.Roll them onto someone who can weigh them.
Commit the next task before you start it, not after it goes wrong.
Steady thoughts are often the fruit of handed over work.
Carry this today
What task on today's list have you not actually handed to God yet?
Pray
Read Proverbs 16:2–4
2All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. 3Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. 4The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
