Cross-References for 1 Kings 2:29

If, however, someone schemes and kills a person deliberately, take the offender away from my altar and put him to death.

Joab's act of clinging to the altar for safety echoes the law regarding intentional murder.

The king replied, “Do as he says; strike him down and bury him. So you will clear me and my family of the guilt of the blood that Joab shed in killing innocent men.

Provides the immediate context and justification for Joab's execution.

“‘Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it.

Relates to the idea of blood guilt and the necessity of atonement through the shedding of the murderer's blood.

“Now you yourself know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to the two commanders of Israel’s armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He killed them, shedding their blood in peacetime as if in battle, and with that blood he stained his belt and sandals.

Explains the background to Joab's crimes and the reasons for his punishment.

And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah are too strong for me. May the Lord repay the evildoer according to his evil deeds!

David's acknowledgement of Joab's power and his wish for divine retribution connects to Solomon's execution of Joab.
