Endurance When You Cannot See Far

Paul pairs three things in verse three, and each has two parts. Work of faith. Labour of love. Patience of hope. The first word in each pair grows out of the second.

Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;

1 Thessalonians 1:3

The last pair is the one for this month. Patience grows out of hope. You do not endure because you can see the end of the road. You endure because you hope in a person, our Lord Jesus Christ, who is already there.

Notice the phrase that closes the verse: in the sight of God and our Father. You may not be able to see far ahead. But you are not out of sight. The Thessalonians were new believers under pressure, and Paul reminds them that their quiet endurance was happening in front of God.

There is a second comfort. Paul says he remembers them without ceasing. Someone else was carrying their names in prayer while they carried on. Endurance is rarely as lonely as it feels.

In harmattan season, when the haze is thick and you can barely make out the next junction, you drive slowly and trust that the road is still there. Hope works the same way. You see a few metres. God sees the whole way, and he sees you on it.

The road ahead is dark.You are not out of his sight.

Patience is not seeing the end. It is trusting the one who does.

Someone may be praying for you today who has never told you.

Carry this today

Who is enduring something near you that you could carry in prayer this week?

Pray

God my Father, I cannot see far down this road, and that frightens me. Thank you that I am never out of your sight. Let my patience grow from hope in Jesus, not from knowing every answer. And thank you for those who pray for me without my knowing. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read 1 Thessalonians 1:2–4

2We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; 3Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; 4Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

Keep praying
