Endurance When You Must Begin Again

Paul talks like a farmer here. Sowing, reaping, seasons. Anyone who has planted anything knows that the work and the harvest are separated by a long stretch of nothing visible.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Galatians 6:9

In due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Due season is not the season you would choose. It is the right season, the one the seed needs. Pulling up maize to check on it does not make it grow faster.

Farmers know something else too. Some years the rain fails. Some harvests are thin. And the next year they plant again. Beginning again is not a sign of failure in farming. It is simply how farming works.

That is why verse ten opens with As we have therefore opportunity. Each opportunity is a new planting. You may have tried to do good for someone and seen nothing come of it. Today is another field. You do not have to make up for the last season before you sow in this one.

Perhaps you are starting a new job after losing the last one, or rebuilding a friendship you thought was finished, or picking up a habit of prayer you let go. Plant the seed in front of you. The season is God's to name.

The field looks empty after sowing. That is what sowing looks like.

A failed harvest last year is not a reason to leave the field this year.

Good done today is a seed, even if you never see what grows.

Carry this today

What good thing have you stopped planting because last season was thin?

Pray

Lord of the harvest, I am tired of sowing and seeing nothing. Give me strength to begin again with the opportunity in front of me today. Keep me from fainting, and teach me to trust your timing instead of mine. Let me do good to the people you put in my path. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Galatians 6:8–10

8For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
