Endurance When the Answer Is No
Paul's list here moves fast, one short phrase after another, like instructions pinned to a kitchen wall. Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer.
Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Notice what sits on either side of those three. Before them comes work: Not slothful in business. After them comes the table: Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Endurance is set in the middle of an ordinary week, not on a mountain.
That matters when God's answer is no. A no can make you want to stop everything. Stop praying, stop serving, close the door and sit in the dark. Paul's list does not allow it. Keep praying, he says, instant, which means constantly, without letting go. And keep the pot on the fire for visitors.
This is not a way of pretending the no does not hurt. Patient in tribulation assumes there is tribulation. It simply refuses to let one closed door close every other door in the house.
If you heard no this month, from a hospital, an embassy, an employer, or from God in the silence, you may still cook for someone this weekend. You may still pray tomorrow morning. Those small faithful things are what endurance looks like from the outside.
A no can close one door.It does not have to close the house.
Prayer after a no is not denial. It is trust that has been hurt and stays anyway.
Someone may need your table even in the week your heart is heavy.
Carry this today
Has a recent no made you close doors God never asked you to close?
Pray
