Quietly

Lamentations is a funeral song for a destroyed city, written by someone who watched it happen. It is five chapters of grief with almost no relief in it.

The exception sits in the middle of chapter three, and it is famous — his mercies are new every morning. What is less quoted is the line that follows a few verses later.

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

Lamentations 3:26

Quietly wait. Not passively, and not silently in the sense of having no feelings — this is a book of loud feelings. Quietly in the sense of without frantic motion.

The man writing this has every reason to be doing something. His city is rubble. And he has concluded, from inside the rubble, that hoping and quietly waiting is a good thing rather than a wasted thing.

That conclusion is worth more coming from him than it would be from someone comfortable.

It is good that a manshould quietly wait.

There is a difference between quiet waiting and numb waiting. One is aimed at God. The other has simply stopped.

He wrote this in the ruins, which is the only place it could have been proved.

Carry this today

Is your waiting quiet, or has it just gone numb?

Pray

Lord, calm the frantic part of me that thinks stillness is neglect. Let my waiting be quiet and aimed at you, not numb and aimed at nothing. Your mercies are new this morning and I am taking today's.

Read Lamentations 3:22–26

22It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
