In The City, Doing Nothing

The resurrection has happened. The disciples have seen him, eaten with him, been commissioned by him. Every reason to move is now in place, and the whole book that follows is about movement.

And the first instruction of the book of Acts is to stay put.

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

Acts 1:4

Wait for the promise. That is what they do for roughly ten days — in a room, in a city, with the most urgent news in human history and explicit orders not to go anywhere with it yet.

Luke tells us what they did with the time. They prayed, they stayed together, and they attended to one piece of unfinished business among themselves. That is it. No campaign, no strategy document.

The waiting was not a pause before the mission. It was the first act of obedience the mission required, and everything after it depended on them getting that part right.

They had the news. They were told to wait.

Some seasons of stillness are not God withholding the work. They are the work, and moving early would cost you the thing you are moving with.

Ten days in a room, and then the whole world.

Carry this today

What are you about to start early?

Pray

Father, I am ready to move and you have not said go. Keep me in the room. Let me use this stillness for prayer and for putting things right with people, instead of burning it on impatience.

Read Acts 1:4–8

4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
