Careful And Troubled

Martha is hosting, and she is doing it properly. Jesus has arrived with a group and somebody has to feed them, and that somebody is her while her sister sits down.

Her complaint is entirely reasonable and she takes it straight to him. Do you not care. Tell her to help me.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

Luke 10:41

He says her name twice, which in that culture is a softening, not a scolding. Martha, Martha. And then: careful and troubled about many things.

Careful in the older sense — full of care, anxious. He does not say the meal does not matter or that hospitality is unspiritual. He says she is troubled about many things, and one thing is needful.

The problem was never the serving. It was that the serving had multiplied into many things until it crowded out the one person she was serving it for, who was sitting in her house, available, for a limited time.

The work was not wrong. It had multiplied.

Busyness rarely arrives as one large wrong decision. It arrives as many small right ones that were each individually defensible.

He was in the house. That was the part that would not be there tomorrow.

Carry this today

What good thing has crowded out the needful one?

Pray

Jesus, I am troubled about many things and most of them are good things, which is why I have not put any of them down. Show me the one that is needful today. Let me sit down in my own house.

Read Luke 10:38–42

38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. 40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
