Courage When the Way Is Quiet
David asks two questions here and answers neither of them. Whom shall I fear? and then of whom shall I be afraid? He leaves the silence after them on purpose.
[A Psalm of David.] The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Questions like that only work when you already know the answer. Nobody. Not because nothing frightening exists, but because of what comes before each question. The LORD is my light, and then the LORD is the strength of my life.
Verse two tells us where that confidence came from, and it is written in the past tense. Enemies came upon me to eat up my flesh, and they stumbled and fell. David is remembering. His courage now is borrowed from a day that already happened.
That matters on the quiet stretches, when nothing dramatic is going on and fear fills the gap. Silence is where old worries talk loudest. David fills the quiet with memory instead.
Tonight, when the house goes still and your mind starts listing what could go wrong, try listing what already went right. Name one time God carried you. Then ask David's question again and let the silence answer it.
Fear asks what might happen.David asks what already did.
A quiet day is a good day to remember, out loud, one thing God has already done.
The questions in this psalm are meant to be left hanging, because the answer is nobody.
Carry this today
What is one past day when God carried you that you could remember tonight?
