Courage In the Next Step

God asks Joshua a question in the middle of a promise. Have not I commanded thee? It sounds almost like a parent at the door, reminding a child of something already said.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Joshua 1:9

Joshua has heard it before. Be strong and of a good courage comes to him again and again in this one chapter. Fear does not always need new information. Often it needs the old word repeated until it lands.

Then look at verse ten. Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people. No long season of feeling courageous comes in between. The next thing Joshua does is give the next instruction. Courage, in this chapter, is measured by what happens after the promise.

The promise is also shaped like a road. The LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Not where you stand still and wait, but wherever you go. The presence is attached to the moving.

Your next step might be small. Sending the message to the landlord. Booking the clinic appointment. Telling your supervisor the figures do not add up. Joshua conquered nothing in verse ten. He only spoke to the officers, and that was enough for that day.

God repeated the promise.Joshua took the next step.

Courage is often just the next obedient sentence you say out loud.

Wherever you go today, the promise is already travelling with you.

Pray

Lord, you have already told me not to be afraid, and I have heard it many times. Help me stop waiting to feel strong and simply take the next step you have put in front of me. Go with me into every room and every hard conversation today. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Joshua 1:8–10

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. 9Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. 10Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
