Courage With Both Feet on the Ground
Jesus says these words on the last night before the cross, at supper, with Judas already gone out into the dark. It is a farewell. Peace I leave with you is the language of someone leaving something behind, the way a parent leaves an inheritance.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
He knows exactly what is coming, for himself and for them. In the next breath he says plainly, I go away. This is not a peace that pretends nothing bad will happen. It is offered with full knowledge of the arrest, the trial and the scattering.
That is what not as the world giveth means here. The world's peace usually depends on the trouble being removed. His does not. It is given in the same breath as the bad news.
He also tells them how it will last. the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, will bring all things to your remembrance. Peace will often come back to them through memory, through recalling what Jesus said.
Courage with both feet on the ground is not pretending things are fine. It is holding his peace while looking straight at what is real. Before your next hard task, ask the Spirit to remind you of one thing Jesus said, and stand on it.
The world's peace waits for trouble to leave. His peace is given while trouble is still coming.
Jesus gave his peace on the worst night of his life, so it is strong enough for yours.
Let the Spirit remind you of one word Jesus said, and stand on it today.
Carry this today
What would it look like to have peace today without pretending the hard thing is not there?
Pray
Read John 14:26–28
26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 27Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
