Courage At the Point of Decision
Pilgrims sang this psalm on the road up to Jerusalem. The hills were in front of them, beautiful and also dangerous. Robbers hid there, and so did the shrines of other gods.
[A Song of degrees.] I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
So the first line is really a moment of decision. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills. Where you look when you are uncertain says a great deal about what you trust.
The answer in verse two goes past the hills to the One who made them. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. The hills are not the help. They were made. Their Maker is the help.
At the point of decision most of us look at whatever is biggest in front of us. The offer letter, the visa interview, the person who wants an answer by Friday. Those are hills. They are real and they matter. But they are not where help comes from.
Before you decide today, look up, and then look further. Ask the God who made heaven and earth, and the embassy and the job market and the person waiting for your reply, to help you choose. He is larger than the thing you are staring at.
The hills are in view.Their Maker is the help.
Whatever looms largest in your decision today was made by someone larger.
Look up before you choose, and then look past what you see.
Carry this today
What hill are you looking at today instead of looking to the One who made it?
