For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Prayer When You Need Clarity

Clarity often arrives as a comparison. This psalm offers two of them, and both are blunt.

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Psalm 84:10

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. One day near God outweighs a thousand elsewhere. Then the second: he would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live comfortably in the tents of wickedness.

A doorkeeper stood at the threshold. Not at the centre, not in the best seat, just at the edge where people came in. The psalmist would take the edge of God's house over the middle of anywhere else.

When a decision feels foggy, it is often because we are weighing things that look the same size. The psalm helps by putting them on the right scale. Which choice keeps you nearer the house, even at the door? Which one is a tent, roomy but wrong?

The last verse says no good thing will he withhold from the upright. That is not a promise of everything you want. It means what he keeps back was not good for you to have. If two offer letters are on the table at midnight, ask which one is the doorway.

Clarity is a matter of scale. One day near him outweighs a thousand away.

The edge of God's house is better than the centre of a wrong one.

What he withholds, he withholds for your good.

Carry this today

Which option in front of you looks roomy but is really a tent you should not live in?

Pray

LORD God, my sun and shield, I cannot see clearly which way to go. Put my choices on the right scale. Let me prefer the door of your house to the comfort of a wrong tent, and help me trust you with whatever you choose not to give me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Psalm 84:9–11

9Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed. 10For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
