Prayer In the Middle of the Work

This conversation happened at a well, around noon, beside a water jar. The woman had come to do a chore. She was not on her way to worship. She was in the middle of the work.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 4:24

She had asked a question about places: this mountain, or Jerusalem? Jesus answers by lifting worship off the map. the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. Not here or there. Spirit and truth, wherever a person is standing.

Then he adds the most surprising line: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. We think of ourselves as the ones looking for God. Here God is the one looking, and he came looking at a well in the heat of the day.

Her reply shows she is still thinking of later: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus is about to tell her that later is now. The one she is waiting for is sitting at the well.

So worship does not wait for the end of the shift. It can happen while you lift crates in the warehouse or carry water for the house, if it is done in spirit and in truth. The Father may already be looking for you there.

She came to draw water. The Father came looking for a worshipper.

Worship is not tied to a building; it is tied to spirit and truth.

The hour you are in is the hour God is seeking you.

Carry this today

Where in your daily chores could you worship in spirit and in truth today?

Pray

Father, I am in the middle of my work, and I did not expect to meet you here. Thank you that you seek worshippers in ordinary places. Let me worship you in spirit and in truth while my hands are busy, honest about who I am and open to who you are. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read John 4:23–25

23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
