Prayer In the Next Step
Psalm 19 begins with the whole sky speaking, the heavens declaring and each day pouring out speech to the next. It ends with one man asking about his own mouth.
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
He asks for two things to be acceptable: the words of my mouth, which everyone can hear, and the meditation of my heart, which nobody can. He does not separate the public from the private. He wants both in the same condition.
Notice the word sight. Words are usually heard, but he asks for them to be acceptable in thy sight. God sees the thought before it becomes a sentence, and he sees the sentence we decided not to say.
Just before this he prays against presumptuous sins, the ones we walk into with our eyes open. Most of those begin as a thought we allowed to sit too long, and then a word.
So the next step is small. It is the next thing you say in the meeting, the next message you send your brother, the next thought you let settle while you wait at the bus stop. He calls God my strength, and my redeemer, because he knows he will need both.
The next step is usually a sentence.Let it be one he can look at.
What you think in the queue becomes what you say at the counter.
God is strength for the word you have not said yet and redeemer for the one you already said.
Carry this today
Which thought have you let sit so long that it is about to come out of your mouth?
Pray
Read Psalm 19:13–14
13Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. 14Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
Keep praying
