Verse of the Day for January 8
For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.Zechariah 4:10 KJV

Who Despises Small Days
The exiles have come home and started rebuilding the temple. The foundation is laid, and it is visibly smaller than the one the old men remember. Ezra records that some of them wept when they saw it.
For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
For who hath despised the day of small things? The question is asked because somebody had.
It is easy to despise a small beginning, and the people most likely to do it are the ones who remember something bigger — a season when you prayed better, read more, felt more.
But the verse pairs that question with an image: the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel. A plumb line. The tool you use when you are actually building, not when you are reminiscing.
God is not comparing this foundation to the old one. He is checking whether it is straight.
They wept that it was small.God was checking that it was straight.
Ten minutes prayed honestly today is a foundation. Comparing it to a season you remember is how people talk themselves out of laying one.
Small and straight beats large and remembered.
Carry this today
What are you refusing to begin because it would be small?

Read Zechariah 4:6–10
6Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. 7Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it. 8Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 9The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. 10For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
