Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Lay Aside The Weight

The chapter before this is the long list of people who lived by faith and mostly did not receive what was promised. Chapter twelve begins by putting the reader inside the same race.

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 12:1

Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience.

Two things are laid aside and they are not the same thing. There is sin, and there is weight — and weight is not described as sinful. It is described as heavy.

A runner strips off what is merely extra. Not wicked, not shameful. Extra. Commitments, possessions, arguments, subscriptions to other people's opinions of you.

And then, having stripped, run with patience — a phrase that sounds contradictory until you notice the race is described as the one set before us, not the one we would have chosen.

Sin, and weight.Weight is not sinful. It is heavy.

Some of what is slowing you down this year is not wrong. It is simply extra, and it is still slowing you down.

Name one weight. Put it down. It does not have to be a sin to be laid aside.

Carry this today

What is not wrong, but is slowing you down?

Pray

Lord, show me the difference between what is sinful and what is merely extra, and give me the freedom to put down things that are not wrong but are not mine to carry.

Read Hebrews 12:1–3

1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
