Teach Us To Number Them

This is the oldest psalm in the collection, attributed to Moses, and it is unsparing about how short a life is. Our years are spent as a tale that is told.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Numbering is an odd request. He does not ask for more days, or for the days to be easier. He asks to be taught to count what he has.

And the reason given is entirely practical: that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Counting is not for melancholy. It is so that the heart gets applied to something worth applying it to.

A person who thinks time is unlimited postpones. A person who has counted spends differently, and the psalm treats that as a skill to be taught rather than a mood to be caught.

He does not ask for more days.He asks to be taught to count them.

You will not drift into a well-spent year. Nobody has.

Count the weeks that are actually left in this season, and let the number decide something.

Carry this today

What would you change if you counted the weeks?

Pray

Teach me to number my days, Lord. Not to frighten me, but so that I stop postponing what I already know matters, and apply my heart to what is worth it.

Read Psalm 90:9–12

9For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. 10The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. 11Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. 12So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
