Somebody Else Went First

Most of us begin a year by resolving. We decide what we will start, what we will stop, and how long we think we can hold it. By the second week the resolving is what has worn us out, not the thing we resolved.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 1:1

The Bible opens on a beginning that is not ours. Before there is a person to make a resolution, there is God, already working, already moving over water that has no shape yet.

That order matters more than it looks. It means beginning is not something you originate out of nothing. It is something you join.

The earth in verse two is described as without form and void — not evil, not opposing, simply unformed. God does not condemn it. He moves over it and starts speaking.

Whatever your life looks like this morning, unformed is not a disqualification. It is the raw material the first chapter of the Bible is about.

You are not starting from nothing. You are joining something already begun.

A year of holy habits does not begin with your willpower. It begins with the fact that God was working long before you woke up and will be working long after today's effort runs out.

Join it. That is a lighter thing to carry than starting it.

Carry this today

What are you trying to originate on your own?

Pray

Father, before I resolve anything, let me remember that You began. Move over what is still unformed in me and speak. I would rather join Your work than manufacture my own.

Read Genesis 1:1–5

1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
