Somebody Loved First

A month about love usually starts by asking people to produce some. Be kinder. Forgive faster. Try harder with the person you find difficult. Most of us have been given that instruction often enough to know it does not generate anything.

We love him, because he first loved us.

1 John 4:19

We love him, because he first loved us. The sentence has a direction, and the direction is the whole doctrine.

John does not command love here. He explains where it comes from, which is somewhere other than the person being asked to show it.

That matters practically. If love originates in you, then running out of it is a character failure and the only remedy is effort. If it originates elsewhere, running out is a supply problem, and the remedy is to go back to the source.

Most people trying to love a difficult person are attempting to manufacture something they were meant to pass on.

You are not the source. You are the second link.

This month will ask hard things of you about people. None of it starts with your reserves.

Receive first. Everything after that is overflow rather than output.

Carry this today

Are you manufacturing love or passing it on?

Pray

Father, I have been trying to produce love out of an empty tank and calling the exhaustion failure. Let me receive from You first, and love people out of what You have given rather than what I can generate.

Read 1 John 4:16–19

16And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 17Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19We love him, because he first loved us.
