Wisdom When You Cannot See Far
Verse 7 is a man bargaining. thousands of rams? ten thousands of rivers of oil? Then, desperately, his own firstborn? The offers keep rising, as if God were a hard seller who needs a higher price.
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
The answer in verse 8 begins with words that change everything: He hath shewed thee, O man. Past tense. Already shown. What God wants is not hidden at the end of a long negotiation.
to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. Three things, and none of them requires you to see far ahead. You can do justly in this transaction. You can love mercy toward this neighbour. You can walk humbly with God for the next mile.
When the future is fogged in, we are tempted to bargain like the man in verse 7. Big promises, dramatic sacrifices, anything to make God show us the road. Micah's answer is gentle and firm. He has already shown you what matters most.
You may not know where you will be in five years. You can still pay your workers fairly on Friday, forgive the neighbour who reversed into your gate, and pray humbly before bed. That is enough light to walk by.
You were looking for a map.He had already given you a path.
God is not asking for a bigger offering. He is asking for a humbler walk.
Justice, mercy and humility can all be done within sight.
Carry this today
What big offering have you been trying to make when God asked for something simpler?
Pray
Read Micah 6:7–9
7Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? 9The LORD'S voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.
