Grace When the Way Is Quiet
Most of the work God does in a person happens where nobody is looking. David says it directly: thou desirest truth in the inward parts. And then, in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
The hidden part. Not the platform, not the public apology, not the visible change people can comment on. The quiet place inside where you tell yourself the story of what you did.
Hyssop was a small, bushy plant. Priests dipped it in water or blood and shook it over whatever needed cleansing. Nothing about it was impressive. It was a humble tool for a holy job, and David asks to be touched by it.
Then comes the most honest line in the passage. the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. David does not pretend the season was painless. He says God broke something. He also says those same bones will one day rejoice, which is a strange and tender hope.
If your faith feels quiet right now, if no one would guess anything is happening, that may be exactly where God is at work. Sweeping the shop floor at closing time, you can still pray for joy and gladness to come back.
The quiet is not empty. It is where the hidden part is healed.
God often does his deepest work where no one claps.
Broken bones can learn to rejoice, though not all at once.
Carry this today
What story are you telling yourself in the hidden part that God wants to make true?
Pray
Read Psalm 51:6–8
6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
