Grace When You Cannot See Far

Paul uses a striking phrase in verse 20. as though God did beseech you by us. Beseech means to beg, to plead earnestly. God, through his messengers, is pleading.

To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

2 Corinthians 5:19

That is not how we usually picture it. We imagine the sinner pleading and God deciding. Here it runs the other way. God is the one asking, and the message is simple: be ye reconciled to God.

Verse 19 explains what makes the plea possible. not imputing their trespasses unto them. God has chosen not to count the debt against the world. He has made the first move, all of it.

Then he hands the message to ordinary people. we are ambassadors for Christ. An ambassador lives far from the king who sent him. He cannot see the throne room. He carries the message anyway, trusting the one who sent it.

When you cannot see far ahead, when the future is blurred and you are unsure what God is doing, you still know the message you carry. In the shop, at the school gate, on the long ride home, you represent a God who pleads rather than demands. You do not need to see the whole road to deliver that.

You may not see the throne. You still carry the message.

God is the one pleading, and he pleads through people like you.

An ambassador does not need to see far to speak clearly.

Carry this today

Do you picture God as pleading with people, or as waiting for them to plead?

Pray

Father, I cannot see far ahead, and I do not understand all you are doing. But I know you have reconciled me to yourself and not counted my trespasses. Make me a faithful ambassador today, carrying your plea gently to the people around me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read 2 Corinthians 5:18–20

18And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
