Four Words After Four Hundred Years

Israel has been in Egypt for four centuries. Generations were born into it, worked in it, and died in it without ever seeing anything else. There is no record of a prophet during that stretch. No promise renewed, no visitation, nothing.

Then a king dies, and the people groan. Not pray, in the first instance. Groan.

And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

Exodus 2:24

Four verbs land in two verses: God heard, God remembered, God looked, God knew. They are stacked deliberately, like someone laying out evidence.

Remembered is the strange one, because it implies a period of not remembering, which cannot be what it means. In Hebrew it is less about recall and more about acting on something long held. God moved on a promise he had been holding since Abraham.

Which means the four hundred years were not silence in the sense of absence. They were silence in the sense of a covenant being kept without commentary.

God heard. God remembered.God looked. God knew.

The groan is what starts the chapter's engine, and a groan is not an eloquent prayer. It is the sound a person makes when words have run out.

That sound was enough.

Carry this today

What have you stopped bringing to God because you cannot phrase it?

Pray

God, I do not have the language for this one any more. You have heard the sound I make when I have run out of words. Remember what you have promised, look on where I actually am, and let me know that you know.

Read Exodus 2:23–25

23And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. 24And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.

Keep praying
