But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

They Shall Walk

This is the verse people put on gym walls, and they usually stop at the eagles. Read the whole line and notice the order it goes in.

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31

Mount up with wings. Run. Walk. That is descending order, and it is descending on purpose. If you were writing an inspirational poster you would end on the eagles.

Isaiah ends on walking, and he attaches the strangest promise to it: and not faint. Not shall run and not be weary — that comes earlier. The final clause is about the person who is no longer soaring or running, who is just putting one foot down after the other.

That is the hardest of the three and he knows it. Anyone can be carried through a crisis on adrenaline. Sustaining an unremarkable walk through year four of something is a different order of grace.

The eagles are for the day it lifts. The walking is for all the other days, and the promise covers those too.

They shall walk,and not faint.

If today is not a soaring day, you have not fallen out of the verse. You have reached the part of it that was written for you.

Walking counts.

Carry this today

Where have you decided that walking means failing?

Pray

God, I am not soaring and I am not running. I am walking, and some days barely. Renew my strength at the pace I am actually moving, and let me not faint in the ordinary middle of this.

Read Isaiah 40:28–31

28Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. 29He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
