Gratitude When Plans Change
Psalm 34 has a heading most people skip. It ties the song to the day David pretended to be mad in the city of Gath, scratching at the gate and letting spit run down his beard, so that a foreign king would send him away instead of killing him.
[A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed.] I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
It was not the plan. David had run there for safety and ended up acting the fool to stay alive.
Out of that day comes I will bless the LORD at all times. Not at the good times. At all of them, including the one where your plan collapsed and you left town with your dignity on the floor.
Verse 2 adds who is listening. The humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. People who have also been brought low will hear a man who has just been humiliated still boasting in God, and it will cheer them. His ruined plan becomes someone else's courage.
Maybe the visa did not come, or the job moved cities, or the wedding date shifted again. You do not have to pretend it was what you wanted. You can still say at all times, and someone lower on the ladder than you may be glad you did.
The plan fell apart. The praise did not have to.
At all times includes the times you would rather forget.
Someone humble is listening to how you talk about your disappointments.
Carry this today
How are you talking about your changed plans when other people are listening?
Pray
Read Psalm 34:1–2
1[A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed.] I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
