Gratitude When Fear Speaks First

Second Corinthians 9 is about money. Paul is asking a church to give generously for poor believers in Jerusalem, and he knows what fear will say first. If I give, I will not have enough.

Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

2 Corinthians 9:15

So he spends the chapter answering that fear. He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you. He is not promising riches. He is promising that God will not leave a generous heart without what it needs to keep doing good.

Then, at the end, he simply runs out of words. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. Unspeakable here means too great to be described. He means Christ himself.

Fear always speaks about what you might lose. Gratitude answers with what you have already been given, and the greatest gift cannot even be measured, so it cannot be taken away.

Next time fear gets the first word, before the bill, at the hospital desk, when the school fees are due, let it speak, and then answer it with Paul's sentence. Out loud if you can.

Fear counts what you might lose. Thanks names a gift too big to count.

Let fear have its sentence, then answer it with thanks.

The greatest gift you have cannot be put into words or taken from you.

Carry this today

What is fear saying first to you today, and what would gratitude answer?

Pray

God, fear has spoken first again this morning, about money and about tomorrow. I hear it, and now I answer it. Thanks be to you for your unspeakable gift, for Christ, who is more than I can describe. Make me generous from that place, not anxious. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read 2 Corinthians 9:14–15

14And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. 15Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
