Purpose When the Cost Is Real

Paul prays something enormous for the Thessalonians. That God would sanctify you wholly, spirit, soul and body, kept blameless until Christ comes. It is the kind of prayer that makes you feel the size of the gap.

Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

1 Thessalonians 5:24

Then he gives the reason it is possible. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. Not you will do it. He will. The one who called you is the one who completes the work.

That matters when the cost of following feels high. A calling can cost sleep, money, comfort and friendships. Paul knew that better than most. He had been driven out of Thessalonica by a mob. But the weight of finishing does not rest on the one who is called.

And then, in verse twenty five, the great apostle asks for help. Brethren, pray for us. Four words. The man who wrote the prayer needed one himself.

When the cost is real, tell someone. Send a message to a friend tonight and say you are struggling and need prayer. Paul did not think it beneath him. Neither should you.

The cost is real.So is the faithfulness of the one who called you.

He who calls you also carries the finishing.

Asking for prayer is not weakness, it is what apostles did.

Carry this today

Who could you ask to pray for you about the cost you are carrying?

Pray

Faithful God, the cost of following you feels heavy right now. Thank you that you who called me will also do it. Sanctify me wholly, spirit, soul and body, and keep me. Give me the humility to ask others to pray for me, as Paul did. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:23–25

23And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 25Brethren, pray for us.

Keep praying
