Purpose When You Must Begin Again
Just before these verses, James and John asked for the best seats in glory. The other ten were angry with them. It was, once again, a moment where the disciples had completely missed the point.
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Jesus does not dismiss them. He begins again with them, patiently, from the ground up. Greatness is turned upside down. whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
Then he points to himself. the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister. If anyone deserved to be served, it was him. He chose the other side of the table.
And look at what happens next. They walk into Jericho, and by the side of the road sits a blind man begging. The great words about a ransom land, almost at once, on one person in the dust. That is what service looked like. The next needy person on the road.
If you have failed, if you have been chasing the wrong seat, you can begin again the way Jesus began again with his friends. Not with a grand plan. With the next person you pass, perhaps the boy selling water at the junction.
They wanted the best seats. He showed them the roadside.
Beginning again often starts with serving someone small.
Jesus is patient with disciples who miss the point twice.
Carry this today
Which seat have you been asking for, and who is sitting by the road?

Read Mark 10:44–46
44And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. 45For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. 46And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.
