Be Careful For Nothing
Paul writes this from prison, which is worth holding onto while reading it, because the instruction is otherwise easy to resent.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Be careful for nothing — again, full of care, anxious. But he does not stop at the prohibition, which would be cruel. He replaces it with a procedure: prayer, supplication, thanksgiving, and let your requests be made known.
Made known is a curious phrase given that God knows already. It is not for God's information. It is the act of stating the thing rather than carrying it as an unshaped dread.
And thanksgiving sits in the middle of the list, not at the end as a polite sign-off. Something about naming what has already been given changes how the next request comes out.
What he promises is not the outcome. It is a peace that passes understanding — which by definition will not make sense given the circumstances, and which he says will guard you, like a garrison.
He does not promise the outcome. He promises the garrison.
Anxiety is usually shapeless. The procedure here forces it into words, and words can be handed over in a way that a fog cannot.
Written by a man in a cell who had every reason to be anxious and had found something else.
Carry this today
Can you say the worry in one clear sentence?
Pray
Read Philippians 4:4–7
4Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. 5Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. 6Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Keep praying
