Ye Shall Hold Your Peace
Israel is trapped. The sea in front, the Egyptian army behind, and no route in any direction. Their reaction is entirely reasonable and thoroughly bitter — were there no graves in Egypt, that you brought us here to die?
The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Hold your peace is a single Hebrew word meaning to be silent, and it is issued as a command in a situation where speech feels like the only available action.
What is being asked is harder than it looks. Not calm — silence. Stop the commentary, stop the case against Moses, stop rehearsing how this happened.
And the very next verse complicates it beautifully. God says to Moses: wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward.
So the silence is not passivity. They stop talking and start walking, and the sea opens as they go.
Not calm.Silence, and then walk.
Some situations are not improved by another round of analysis, and the analysis is what is exhausting you.
Hold your peace, and go forward. Those two instructions arrive in consecutive verses.
Carry this today
What situation are you analysing instead of walking into?

Read Exodus 14:10–14
10And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. 11And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? 12Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. 13And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. 14The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
