Because He Careth

This verse gets quoted so often that the second half has gone soft, and the second half is the argument.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

1 Peter 5:7

Cast all your care upon him — that is the instruction. For he careth for you — that is the reason, and without it the instruction is just advice.

Peter does not say cast your care on God because worry is unproductive, which is true and useless. He does not say cast it because God is powerful, which would make God capable but not necessarily interested.

He says do it because God cares about you. The transfer works because there is somebody on the other end who wants it.

Notice too what precedes it: humble yourselves. Peter puts casting your care in the same breath as humility, which suggests he thinks carrying everything yourself is a form of pride. That is an uncomfortable idea and I think he meant it to be.

Not because worry is useless.Because he cares.

Handing something over requires believing the person taking it wants it. Most of us fail at the second part, not the first.

He is not tolerating your concerns. He is interested in them.

Carry this today

What do you not quite believe God is interested in?

Pray

Father, I have been holding this because somewhere underneath I am not sure you want it. Convince me otherwise. You care for me — not the tidy version of me, this one — and I am handing it across.

Read 1 Peter 5:5–7

5Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
