Courage For an Ordinary Tuesday
Count the word my in verse two. my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, and it keeps going. David does not stop at one picture of God. He needs a whole row of them.
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
That is honest. A single day asks for more than one kind of help. A rock to stand on in the morning. A fortress when the criticism starts at work. A deliverer when the bus breaks down and the money is short. A high tower when you need to see further than the next hour.
Before any of the list, though, comes a simpler sentence. I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. The psalm begins with affection, not with strategy.
Ordinary days are where this matters. Nobody writes songs about Tuesday, yet most of life happens on one. David wrote this after a great rescue, according to its title, but the words he chose are things you lean on every day. Rocks and towers do not move. That is the point of them.
Pick one of the names for today. If the day feels shaky, make it rock. If it feels crowded, make it fortress. Say it under your breath on the walk to the shop.
One day needs many kinds of help.God gave himself many names.
Choose one of David's names for God and carry it into an ordinary hour.
The psalm starts with love before it starts with need.
Carry this today
Which of David's names for God do you most need on this particular day?

Read Psalm 18:1–3
1[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said,] I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. 2The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. 3I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
