Both Men Heard It
The Sermon on the Mount ends with two builders, and the detail everybody remembers is the rock and the sand. The detail worth noticing is that both men heard the same sermon.
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them. The difference between the two houses is not information. It is not sincerity either. It is one verb.
And the houses look identical until the weather comes. Jesus is careful about this: the rain, the floods and the winds beat on both. The foundation is invisible in fair conditions and decisive in bad ones.
Which means you cannot tell, on a calm Tuesday, which kind of hearer you are. The two look the same from the outside and feel the same from the inside.
The only way to know is to check whether hearing has turned into doing anywhere in particular, this week, in something you could name.
Both men heard the sermon.One of them did it.
Agreeing with a truth produces a warm feeling that is very easy to mistake for obedience.
Name one thing you heard recently and have not done. That is where the foundation is being poured or not poured.
