Knit With The Soul
David has just killed Goliath, and the person with the most to lose from it is Jonathan. He is the king's son and the natural heir, and the crowd is already singing that David has killed more than his father.
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
The soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David. Knit is a weaving word — two things bound so that pulling one moves the other.
And then he does something with his clothes. He strips off his robe, his garments, his sword, his bow and his girdle, and gives them to David.
Those are not gifts. That is the wardrobe of a crown prince, and handing it to the man the country is singing about is an abdication performed in public.
Jonathan loved the person who cost him the throne, and the text records no bitterness about it anywhere in the chapters that follow.
He had the most to lose.He handed over the robe.
Rivalry is the ordinary response to somebody who is gaining what you wanted. Jonathan is in scripture partly to show it is not the only one.
There is somebody whose rise has cost you something. Bless them out loud.
Carry this today
Whose success has quietly cost you something?

Read 1 Samuel 18:1–4
1And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house. 3Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
