They Seemed But A Few Days
Jacob agrees to work seven years for Rachel. Seven years is a long time to be paid nothing, in a foreign country, for an uncle who will later cheat him.
And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
And they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
That is not a statement about how time works. Seven years took seven years. It is a statement about what love does to the experience of cost.
Most of what we call sacrifice in relationships is really accounting — a private tally of what has been given and what has come back. The tally is usually accurate and it is always corrosive.
Jacob is not keeping one. The years are real, the labour is real, and he is not adding them up.
The verse is placed just before the deception that costs him seven more. He works those too.
Seven years took seven years. He was not counting them.
The question is not whether you are giving more than you receive. In most seasons of most relationships, somebody is.
The question is whether you are keeping the ledger.
Carry this today
Who are you keeping a private tally against?

Read Genesis 29:18–20
18And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. 19And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. 20And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
