Love Your Enemies

This is the hardest sentence Jesus ever spoke to ordinary people, and it is worth noticing how practical he makes it.

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Matthew 5:44

Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

Four verbs, and not one of them is a feeling. Love, bless, do good, pray. Every item is something you can perform this week without any change in how you feel about the person.

The reason he gives is family resemblance: that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven, who sends rain on the just and the unjust.

God's kindness is not distributed on merit and never has been. The weather is the evidence.

Praying for someone is the item most people skip, and it is the one that changes the person praying. It is very difficult to keep a settled contempt for somebody you are genuinely asking God to bless.

Four verbs.Not one of them is a feeling.

He does not ask you to feel warmly toward them. He asks you to act, and to pray, and lets the rest follow or not.

Start with the prayer. It is the one that works on you.

Carry this today

Could you pray honestly for their good today?

Pray

Father, You send rain on people who curse You. I am naming the person I resent, and I am asking You to bless them — not because I feel it, but because You told me to.

Read Matthew 5:43–48

43Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? 48Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Keep praying
