When My Father And Mother Forsake Me

This psalm is confident for nine verses — the Lord is my light, whom shall I fear, though an host encamp against me. Then it names the one thing the confidence had been built over.

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

Psalm 27:10

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up.

The verse assumes it as a possibility rather than a hypothetical. David does not say if. He builds the sentence on when.

That is unusual honesty in a hymn. The relationships that are supposed to be unconditional are the ones people are most ashamed to admit have failed.

Take me up is a word used for gathering something in — the way you would collect a person who had been left somewhere.

Nothing here says the forsaking did not matter, or that God is a replacement for what was owed to you. It says only that the gathering happens after it, and by someone else.

He does not say if.He says when.

Not everyone reading this had parents who stayed. The psalm does not ask anyone to pretend otherwise.

The word is gathered. Somebody comes and collects what was left.

Carry this today

What did their leaving teach you about your worth?

Pray

Lord, You know who was meant to hold me and did not. I bring the whole of it to You. Gather me up, and heal what that absence taught me about myself.

Read Psalm 27:7–10

7Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me. 8When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek. 9Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. 10When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
