Greater Love Hath No Man
This verse is on war memorials, which is right but incomplete. In its own setting it is said at a dinner table, hours before the speaker demonstrates it.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
The next sentence is the surprising one. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you — and then, two verses later, he stops calling them servants and calls them friends because he has told them everything.
A servant knows the task. A friend knows the reason. That is the distinction he draws, and he moves them across it deliberately on the last night.
Laying down a life is the headline. But the friendship it is offered inside is defined by disclosure — by being told what the master is doing and why.
A servant knows the task.A friend knows the reason.
Most of us relate to God as servants: keeping the instructions and never asking what they are for.
He has already moved you. The category changed on the last night.

Are you God's servant or God's friend in practice?

Read John 15:12–15
12This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
