Joy In the Work at Hand
David wrote this in the wilderness of Judah, probably on the run. He is lying awake. When I remember thee upon my bed, he says, and the night watches stretch out ahead of him.
Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
Verse eight holds two grips at once. My soul followeth hard after thee. That is David reaching. thy right hand upholdeth me. That is God holding. The man is clinging and being held in the same breath.
Work is like that. Some days you do the reaching. You show up, you push, you keep going after God in the middle of a long shift. And all the while there is a hand under you that you did not put there.
His joy comes from remembering. Because thou hast been my help, in the past tense, he can sing in the shadow of the wings now. Yesterday's help becomes today's song.
At your desk or your workbench or your stall today, think back to one time God helped you. Name it. Then pick up the next task knowing the same right hand is still there.
You reach after him.He is already holding you.
The work in front of you is not carried by your grip alone.
Remember one past help today, and let it make you glad.
Carry this today
What past help from God could you remember while you work today?
Pray
Read Psalm 63:6–8
6When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. 7Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. 8My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
Keep praying
