Joy When the Way Is Quiet
The famous line is in verse five, but verse six is the honest one. in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. David admits he got comfortable, and then something moved him.
For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
So when he writes weeping may endure for a night, he is not offering a slogan. He has spent that night. The Hebrew word behind endure means to lodge, like a guest who arrives late and sleeps in the spare room.
Weeping is allowed to stay the night. It is not allowed to move in. And the joy that follows is not something David goes out to find. It cometh in the morning, the way morning itself comes, without being asked.
Nobody hurries a sunrise. You can lie awake at three o'clock and the dawn will not come one minute sooner. But it does come. The quiet stretch before it is not proof that morning has been cancelled.
If the house is silent tonight and the ache is loud, leave the curtains open. You do not have to produce the morning. You only have to wait for it.
Weeping may stay the night. It does not get to stay for good.
The quiet before dawn is still part of the night, and the night still ends.
Comfortable seasons can make us careless, and hard ones can make us honest.
Carry this today
Where have you been trying to hurry a morning that only God can bring?
Pray
Read Psalm 30:4–6
4Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. 5For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. 6And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.
