Joy In the Middle of the Work

The seventy came back from their mission thrilled. Even the devils had obeyed them. They had seen results, and the results were spectacular.

Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Luke 10:20

Jesus does not deny the results. He gave them the power. But he redirects their joy. in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you. but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Results change. Some weeks the work goes brilliantly, and some weeks nothing moves. If your joy is tied to outcomes, it will rise and fall with every report. A name written in heaven does not rise and fall.

Then Luke tells us something rare. In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit. Jesus is glad, and what makes him glad is that the Father has shown these things to babes, not to the clever. He rejoices in grace, not in performance.

In the middle of a project, a semester, a busy season at the shop, check where your joy is anchored. Write your name at the top of today's list and remember it is written somewhere far more permanent.

Results go up and down.Your name stays written.

Do the work, but do not let the work be the reason for your joy.

Jesus rejoiced over grace given to ordinary people.

Carry this today

Is your joy this week resting on results or on your name written in heaven?

Pray

Lord Jesus, I am in the middle of the work and I keep measuring my joy by how it is going. Teach me to rejoice that my name is written in heaven. Let me share your gladness over the Father's grace to ordinary people, including me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Luke 10:19–21

19Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. 21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
