Verse of the Day for December 1

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
Nehemiah 8:10 KJV

Joy Before You Feel Ready

The order of events matters here. The people heard the law read aloud, and all the people wept. They were not wrong to weep. They had just understood how far they had drifted.

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Nehemiah 8:10

Then the leaders told them to stop. Not because tears were bad, but because the day was holy, and holy days in Israel were feasts. Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet. Joy was handed to them as an instruction while their faces were still wet.

That is the surprise. Nobody waited for them to feel ready. The joy came first as something to do, a meal to eat and a plate to send, and the feeling was left to catch up.

Notice whose joy it is, too. the joy of the LORD is your strength. Not your joy in the Lord, which comes and goes, but his own gladness over his people, which holds you up when yours has run out.

So if this morning finds you heavy, do one joyful thing anyway. Cook for someone. Send a portion to the neighbour in the next flat who has nothing prepared. Let the feeling arrive later, the way it did in Jerusalem.

They were told to feast with wet faces.Joy came first, and the feeling followed.

You do not need to feel glad in order to obey gladness.

Somebody near you has nothing prepared today, and that is your portion to send.

Carry this today

What one joyful thing could you do today before you feel like it?

Pray

Lord, I am not ready to rejoice, and you know why. Give me something joyful to do before I feel it. Show me whose table is empty today, and let your own gladness over me be the strength I lean on when mine is gone. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Nehemiah 8:9–11

9And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. 10Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. 11So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.
