Wisdom Without an Audience

Be not wise in thine own eyes. We usually worry about looking foolish in front of others. Proverbs worries about something quieter, looking wise in front of ourselves.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Proverbs 3:7

Your own eyes are the audience that never leaves. They watch every choice and they are easily impressed. Most self-deception does not happen on a stage. It happens alone, in the private speech we give ourselves about why this shortcut is fine.

The cure is twofold and plain: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. Turn your attention to the one whose opinion is true, and then walk away from the thing you were justifying.

Look where the passage says the benefit lands: health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. The navel and the marrow. Places nobody sees. This is not a promise that faithful people never fall ill. It is a picture of wholeness reaching the hidden centre of a person, the very place where unconfessed things ache.

Wisdom without an audience looks like the office worker who corrects an expense claim nobody would have checked. Or the student who hands back the leaked exam paper unread. No one claps. Something deep in the bones is quieter afterwards.

The hardest audience to fool is God.The easiest is yourself.

Your private reasons deserve as much honesty as your public ones.

The good you do unseen still reaches the marrow.

Carry this today

What have you been calling wise in your own eyes that you would hesitate to explain to God?

Pray

Lord, I am very good at convincing myself. Show me where I have been wise in my own eyes. Give me the reverence to care more about your view than mine, and the courage to turn from what I have been excusing, even when nobody else would ever know. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Proverbs 3:6–8

6In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
