Wisdom In the Next Step
He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous. The picture is of a storehouse. Grain put by in a good season so that there is bread in a lean one.
For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
That changes how we think about the next step. We tend to imagine God handing out guidance on the spot or not at all, and we panic when nothing comes in the moment. Proverbs says he has been laying it up already, before you knew you would need it.
Notice where it comes from: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. Wisdom here is spoken. It is not a feeling that arrives in the chest but a word that has been said, and much of it is already written down for you.
And it comes with protection: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. A buckler is a small shield, the kind you carry close. Not a fortress you hide inside, but cover for someone who is still walking.
So the next step may not need a new revelation. It may need you to go back to the store. The passage you read last month, the counsel your pastor gave, the verse your grandmother repeated over the cooking pot. Open the cupboard before you decide it is empty.
You are asking for bread today. He stored it up long ago.
Guidance is often not missing. It is stored where you have not looked lately.
Walk the step you can see, and trust the small shield on your arm.
Carry this today
What wisdom has God already stored up for you that you have stopped returning to?
Pray
Read Proverbs 2:5–7
5Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. 6For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 7He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
