Wisdom In the Waiting Room

Commit thy works unto the LORD. The Hebrew word behind commit has the sense of rolling. Roll your works onto the LORD, the way you roll a heavy load off your back onto a cart that can carry it.

All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.

Proverbs 16:2

Waiting rooms are where we feel the weight most. The hospital corridor before the doctor comes out. The bench at the embassy. The hour before the exam results are posted. There is nothing left to do, and that is what makes it heavy.

The verses before this one are humbling. Even the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. And while All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes, the LORD weigheth the spirits. He sees what we cannot see, including in ourselves.

That is a comfort in a waiting room. The outcome does not rest on our ability to read the situation correctly. It rests with one who weighs everything truly. Committing our works to him does not guarantee the result we want. It means we stop carrying what was never ours to hold.

And the promise is about our thoughts: they shall be established. Settled. Not every answer arrives, but the mind can stop spinning. Roll it over. Then sit, and breathe, and wait with him.

You cannot carry the outcome. You can roll it onto him.

Waiting is lighter when you are not also holding the result.

He weighs what you cannot measure.

Carry this today

What are you still carrying in the waiting that you could roll onto the Lord today?

Pray

Lord, I am waiting and I feel the weight of what I cannot control. I roll it onto you now, the outcome, the fear, the endless what ifs. You weigh all things rightly. Settle my thoughts while I wait, and stay with me in this room. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Read Proverbs 16:1–3

1The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. 2All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. 3Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
