April 13
Verse of the Day for April 13
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.Isaiah 61:3 KJV

Beauty For Ashes
Jesus read the opening of this chapter aloud in the synagogue at Nazareth, stopped mid-sentence, sat down and said it was fulfilled that day.
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
To give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.
Three exchanges, and each one takes a mourning custom and reverses it. Ashes on the head, no oil, torn clothing — that was what grief looked like publicly in that culture.
So this is not an abstract promise about feeling better. It is a description of somebody being visibly re-dressed, item by item, in front of the people who had watched them mourn.
The last line names the purpose: that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
Trees are slow. Even in a verse about exchange, the outcome is something that takes years to become visible.
Not an abstract promise.Being re-dressed, item by item.
Ashes were worn where people could see them. So is the exchange.
The result is a tree, which is not a quick outcome. Restoration and speed are different promises.
Carry this today
What grief are you still visibly dressed in?

Read Isaiah 61:1–3
1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
